The Sleepers are a South African rock band based in Cape Town. I spent some time with them while they were practicing and asked them some questions. Thanks guys! This was so much fun!
Find them here on Facebook. For those that are in Cape Town, The Sleepers are playing at Zula in Long Street on 30 April. Don’t miss it!

How long have The Sleepers been around and how long have you been playing together with the current members?
The Sleepers have existed for a long time, but the band has evolved into an entirely new creature with our current lineup. We had a really unified vision for where we wanted to take our sound early on and we’ve been working together for just over a year to make that happen.
What would you say your main musical influences are?
It’s hip to say this right now, but we grew up in the 90′s and a lot of the stuff from that decade had a huge impact on us. Back then bands still tried to be unique and tried to push boundaries. So bands like The Smashing Pumpkins, Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails are all big influences. We love bands like The Mars Volta and Mastodon and older acts like Pink Floyd and Jimi Hendrix still hold big places in our heads. I guess I should mention some more popular current music here to help people put us in a box, but I really have no fucking idea how the average person tolerates half the bullshit they have on their iPod at the moment.
What is your creative process?
That’s not something we’d ever discuss in depth, but I will tell you that we place a lot of emphasis on creating and defining the environment in which each piece of music exists. In that way, we create context for the characters or objects that each person might become.
You are busy working on a new album at the moment, when are you planning on launching?
We have divided the production schedule into sections to allow us to pour everything we have into each and every step along the way, so its difficult to say when all the work will culminate into a complete album. That said, we are in the final stages of producing the first three tracks for the album, which you’ll be able to hear very soon.
We’re essentially reintroducing The Sleepers with these new tracks and its going to be interesting to see how existing local and international fans react and how new listeners react to something that’s fundamentally different to what they’re used to.
What music are each of the members currently listening to?
