Tell us a bit about yourself… I’m a 22 year old freelance illustrator from the small seaside town of Jeffreys Bay in the Eastern Cape. I have spent the past 3 years studying in PE and majored in Fine Art Illustration. I’ve been considering furthering my studies, but so far I’ve really been enjoying the freedom to draw whatever I fancy without the limitations and expectations of a university course ( the fine art department seems to have a penchant for anything involving genitalia and/or bodily fluids, which is not my cup of tea). I hope to make the move to Cape Town next year, it’s definitely time for a change of scenery!
What are you working on at the moment? In the past few months I’ve been exhibiting around the PE area, selling prints via my blog and most recently, working with Billabong SA’s previous owner on some Tshirt designs for her new company and anti-nuclear campaign. I’m also trying to make plans to hop on a plane and travel a bit later on this year- daydreams of autumn in Europe have been making me horribly unproductive..
Artists that you love? There are so many insanely talented local and international creatives that I couldn’t possibly narrow it down. If I did, though, my wonderful man-friend Quintin Weyer would certainly sneak onto the list..you can check out his weird creations here: http://cargocollective.com/itsmytreehouseokay
What music are you listening to at the moment? Also too many fantastic bands to mention, but I’ve been enjoying listening to Andrew Bird, Santogold and Craig Batis’s new project Yo Grapes while I draw.
Do you collect anything? I have something of an obsession with birds. I love what they represent and really enjoy drawing them, so they often creep into my work. I also think the shapes of the smaller kinds are just too sweet, with their little heads popped on top of their big, fat bellies. I’m always on the hunt for ceramic birds to add to my growing flock.
What’s on your wish list at the moment? If I had a Cannon 50mm lens, pastel pink hair, a plane ticket to anywhere, a properly functioning laptop and a bunny named Peaches, my life would be complete.
Where are your favourite places to visit and eat at in PE? I could easily eat the fried rice and green calamari curry from Natti’s Thai Kitchen every single day and Vovo Telo’s almond croissants washed down with a lovingly made cup of coffee is hard to beat in the morning. My manfriend regularly uses this to lure me out of bed and oh my it works.
Where can people buy your work? You can buy my work off my blog Bow & Arrow at http://wonder-meyer.blogspot.com and keep an eye out for my new website which should be up and running soon.
