Adidas Originals presents ‘I ART JOBURG,’ a project curated by /ANDPEOPLE that introduces five world renowned street and fine artists to the heart of Maboneng Precinct in Johannesburg’s central art district.
Artists Remed (Madrid), Steve ‘ESPO’ Powers (New York), ROA (Belgium) as well as local artists Falko (Cape Town) and Cameron Platter (Durban) headline the project alongside legendary street culture photographer Martha Cooper (New York) who collaborated with each artist, documenting the process.
I attended STR.CRD on 29 September where talks were given by Ricky Lee Gordon aka Freddy Sam (Cape Town) , Monica Campana (Atlanta), Falko (Cape Town) as well as Martha Cooper (New York).
A couple of months ago, on my cinder&skylark Facebook page, I was saying how much I loved and how many times I have watched the movie Beautiful Losers. (full movie available on Youtube.) Well… I got to meet and photograph Steve ESPO powers on the weekend! What an amazing experience! I ART and Adidas also screened Steve’s new movie A love letter for you on Saturday night at STR.CRD.
The official opening of the I ART JOBURG Exhibition to the public is on 5 October. After which, there will be guided walks of the urban exhibition every Saturday over the course of October. See the I ART JOBURG site.
The exhibition will run for two months before its final leg at /A WORD OF ART, Cape Town in the first quarter of 2013.
I only had a few hours to walk around Maboneng on Sunday before catching my plane back to Cape Town and unfortunately could not capture all the pieces. Those lucky enough to be be in Joburg during October can go and join the walks.
