DEER HUNTER.

Walking into Deer Hunter is like entering the perfectly-art-directed-home of the coolest kid you’ll ever know. I chatted to owners, and general suppliers of radness, Kezia and Shaun about moving to Cape Town and collectibles.

How did Deer Hunter come about? I guess it was a whole chain of events… Shaun owned Tokyo Star in Melville (Japanese pop diner), I was his waitress. I got on with my life, he got on with his, Shaun opened an amazing book shop called Ballards Books, I became an art director. We hooked up. He opened Go Go bar  Newtown, we started collecting more and more to the point we only had a small passage way to get from our front door, through the lounge, to the rest of the house. It was mental. So we tried markets for a while, but decided we didn’t want to end up as crusty bitter market people, so we opened a shop in Greenside. Then we decided we wanted to give Cape Town a try so we packed up and left and now we’re here. It’s called Deer Hunter because we collect deer, not because we shoot them.

What kind of things do you stock? Vinyl, books, prints, collectibles, toys, oddities, furniture and vintage clothing.

What’s your favourite item in store at the moment? Can’t name 1!! Original Battlestar Galactica figurines, Mickey Mouse body suit, signed William Shatner picture, stack of original sixties Playboys, complete Beatles Singles vinyl box set, Atari stuff…

What would your dream item for the store be? The complete castle greyskull in the box, a mint Beatles butcher LP and a taxidermy jackalope.

If you could go on a sourcing mission anywhere in the world, where would you go and why? USA.. We’re obsessed with storage wars and american Pickers, so we both have actual dreams of driving around the states filling trucks with stuff! We wake up sad.

What do you do when you’re not selling things? I’m at art director, Shaun runs the shop and is Die Antwoord’s South African tour manager. We spend our “off” time with our 2 year old daughter, Frankie, mostly thrifting and blomming at the beach.

Who should visit Deer Hunter? audiophiles, punks, nerds, collectors, thrifters, bean heads, hipsters, Pickers, moms, ravers, kids, beatniks, mods, dads, hoarders, bearded men and everyone else.

If someone offered to do a portrait of you, would you want it done in needlepoint, oil paint or ceramics? Obvs. Needlepoint.

Keep up to date with Deer Hunter on facebook.
