Famke Jewellery

Famke Jewellery is a Cape Town based label that makes really interesting and sometimes dark-pretty jewellery. I asked Famke a few questions to get to know her a bit and I have uploaded her brand new video (which is really really cool) showcasing her new collection.

- Famke Koene is the person behind Famke and she has just released a film by Andre Pienaar and Adriaan Louw which allows us to glimpse into the Summer 2013 jewellery range designed and manufactured by Famke herself. Inspired by the structural beauty of vertebrae and maintaining eloquent geometry Famke has once again produced a thought provoking and emotively stimulating range of signature handmade jewellery for this season.

 1. How long have you been making jewellery and when did you start your label? I’ve been making jewellery for four years now and started my label exactly 1 year ago today.

What has inspired your latest collection? i see you have used quite a few bone like pieces, is your fascination with bones the result of  a run-in you had with a serial killer when you were younger? Haha…I’ve always had a love for bones and feathers and found it an interesting alternative to the more common gemstones people use. I’m always game for something a little different and daring.

Do you often wear your own jewellery? I do sometimes. if it i something new that i’m excited about I’ll wear it and show it off a bit.

How often do you come up with ideas? and when you do have one do you go into the studio immediately to make it or do you store it until you have a whole new collection? For my everyday range I’ll make something and then suddenly get a new idea whilst at my bench and then test it out, so often styles get altered and then new designs come from that. With my bespoke range I’ll collect treasures and design for months and then finally manufacture everything together. I like the idea of them all being ‘born’ together.

Do you handmade every one of your pieces or do you have a team that helps you? I make everything myself. I like having that control. It’s tough at times but super rewarding in the end.

Where can you buy your pieces? You can buy directly from me or from my stockists: Mungo and Gemima, Mr and Mrs, Haas, The Fringe Arts, Stefania Morland. You can also pick a piece on the odd Citymob sale.
